The pictures are from the Library of Congress collection of work generated by the Farm Service Administration from 1937 to 1942. They are the starting point for each story. The author contemplates them before adding each new comment. They can be enlarged by clicking on them. A link to the sources is shown nearby.

That's Artha Birdinger's work, Artha starts with the garden and thats more than half of it, and the rest is to take the picture right away, cause even Artha's colors fade by St. Swithin's day. Cooked, with the right add ins, a deep toasty red shows up.
You put some chile's in with that, and you put a big old bowl of it and a spoon by the meat tent, and those buckaroo's will use it up and call for more, and when the meat runs out, by gol, they put it on the turnips. Any of Artha's sauces will get you through a turnip winter, but you'll be beggin for chokecherry tea and green apples by Easter.
